Real Americans
This past weekend when my grandson Brandon and I closed the holiday at our favorite pool, I was delivered a poignant reminder regarding the nature of Americans. This message came on the heels of my criticism voiced in a conversation with a beautiful woman of European descent who was sitting next to us. (I realized after the fact this was not by chance!)
As we discussed her impressions of America and its people, I volunteered several opinions regarding Americans such as our adrenalin addiction with a focus on material possessions and the amassing of things outside of ourselves. “This is true” she said hesitantly, “but I have never seen people so generous and so caring of others in need. It has not been my experience in life to see people help people they do not even know—they are very kind!”
For once, I was speechless and felt tears welling up behind my sunglasses as her response caught me by surprise and touched my heart. I looked at her and thought what a beautiful Memorial Day message, delivered by someone who described herself as an American citizen but not a ‘real’ American. Well, I think one does not get any ‘more real’ for she brought out the beauty in people that I sometimes fail to notice.
Although there are many options that we could consider to improve our personal lives and the future of this amazing melting pot we live in, my new friend was right. No other group of people is more enthusiastic, loyal, generous or effective than the people of this county when they support what they believe in.
This reminder humbled me and refreshed my perspective of Americans, many of whom are currently struggling with economic issues, health problems and severe stress in the work place. What could happen here if the majority supported the notion of a sustainable culture and the concept that less is more?
As for ‘real’ Americans, anyone and everyone who is a citizen of this country is a real American and sometimes our newer members revitalize our vision, hope and perspective!
Have a Wonderful Summer!
A Potted Garden Blessings, Cheryl
